Simply looking at somebody and understanding what is going on in their minds....! What an idea! If only we could do that! Would be worth a sum of money with many zeroes in it, wouldn't it?
What if I told you that it is not only possible, but that all of us have that ability. Yes, that is right. All of us human beings, along with quite a few other animals do have that ability!
We can look at people and read what they are feeling. At times, we can also see their intentions. Thinking, I would say would be difficult to do. Any guesses why?
That is because we may not have the same data that they do. However, it is not difficult to understand other's motivations or prime movers.
What we have to do is, trust our instincts a bit more. Take our time bring into focus things that are not spoken. Silence helps. Listen in silence. Take the time to tap into your instincts. What is your gut feeling telling you? Listen to it and then respond.
There are many books out there that tell you to look at body language. Look at where the hand is or where the feet are facing. Yes, they are all pertinent. However, not in isolation. Just looking at the eyes or the position of the hands, cannot tell you much. Focusing too much on these things can be misleading and a waste of time at best. You need to take in the whole picture.
For those of you fiction readers out there, here is a reference from a very popular series of books, that illustrates this point. In Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot series, there is a book called 'One, Two, Buckle my Shoe' In this book, a key character called Alistair Blunt is introduced. If you read that passage, you will understand the dangers of reading too much into body language.
Email or comment if you are not able to get a hold of this book, I will post that portion next week. The wikipedia reference is linked to the title of the book above, to help you look for the book online.
Enjoy!
