Have you heard these comments about speakers?
" She is a good speaker!"
" He has the gift of the gab."
"He handles the audience well!"
"She has good crowd control.."
..... and so on and so forth..!
All good things to hear, no doubt.
But as a communication professional, what I like to hear the most.. or sometimes just see the most is ... heads nodding in complete agreement or soft, involuntary grunts of assent, meaning 'yes.. I agree with you' or 'yes, I see what you are saying'. The body language of the audience is also open and accepting, and you can sense the connection that the speaker has with the audience.
How does this happen? What can you, as a speaker do, to make this happen?
The answer itself is very simple.
Honesty.
To make it happen, to be open and honest in your speech, is difficult.
Speak what you feel, from the heart and see what happens.
Try it today. You don't have wait for a podium or auditorium, you can try this with your close family and friends.
Then carry the practice to your professional communication, written or spoken.
Remember that honesty is not about throwing facts in someone's face. It is about telling them what you think or feel, substantiated by the why.. where possible. You will feel an instant connection with your audience. The best part is that it just appears difficult.. once you break the initial barrier then you will see that it is ridiculously easy.
That is all for the week. Keep those mails and comments coming. I greatly appreciate feedback. After all communication is a two way street!
See you next week!
